Caring for Cut Flowers: Make Your Bouquet Last Longer

Receiving a beautiful bouquet is wonderful, but it's disappointing when flowers wilt quickly. With proper care, most cut flowers can last up to two weeks, allowing you to enjoy your arrangement much longer.
Start with Fresh Water
The most important factor in keeping cut flowers fresh is clean water. Use a clean vase filled with cool water. Warm water is absorbed faster, which can cause flowers to open too quickly and wilt. Change the water every two to three days, and each time you do, rinse the vase thoroughly to prevent bacterial growth.
Prepare Your Flowers
When you receive your bouquet, immediately trim about two centimetres from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline, as submerged foliage rots and creates bacteria that clogs the stems.
Use Flower Food
Most bouquets come with a sachet of flower food. This isn't just nice to have—it's essential. Flower food contains sugars to feed the flowers, biocide to prevent bacterial growth, and adjusts the pH of the water. If you don't have the packet, you can make a simple alternative: add a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of bleach to the water.
Location Matters
Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, heat sources like radiators, and ripening fruit. Ethylene gas from fruit speeds up flower aging. Cool, indirect light is ideal. Avoid placing flowers near air conditioning vents or draughts, which can dry them out quickly.
Daily Maintenance
- Check water levels daily and top up as needed
- Remove any flowers that begin to fade or wilt
- Mist flowers lightly with water to keep them hydrated
- Re-cut stems every few days if flowers are lasting longer
- Rotate the vase to ensure even light exposure
Extend the Life
Different flowers have different lifespans. Roses and carnations last longest (up to three weeks), whilst tulips and daffodils typically last one to two weeks. Gerberas and sunflowers fall somewhere in between. Knowing what you have helps set realistic expectations.
When to Say Goodbye
Once flowers begin to decline significantly, it's time to remove them. However, you can extend arrangements by removing spent flowers and rearranging the remaining blooms in a smaller vase with fresh water and flower food.
Proper care transforms a bouquet from a fleeting pleasure into a lasting joy. These simple steps ensure you can appreciate your flowers fully and create beautiful displays throughout your home.
